Live Coverage

For the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, FIFA has optimised its broadcast operations by investing in the latest technological innovations and refining its multilateral coverage.
One of the new features implemented this year is the UHD/HDR standard, applied to capture specific live match content. This provides a more immersive experience for viewers. UHD/HDR was used during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ for multilateral production, but at the time it required a dual-layer production set-up. Advances in technology mean that for 2022, there is a single unified layer capture/transmission workflow, integrating all formats and allowing the set-up to be streamlined.
The live match production plan of the FIFA World Cup™ offers a comprehensive and high standard coverage of the matches and match-related activities. Taking advantage of the compact nature of Qatar and the competition, six world-class directors and their hand-picked teams have been appointed and split into two match clusters.
Each match of the competition is covered with a standard camera plan with up to 42 cameras located in the stadium and by the field of play to provide viewers with the best possible angles.
Special cameras such as Super Slow Motion (SSM) and Ultra Motion (UM) provide an immersive element to the coverage, allowing for focus on key players or special actions and a more tailored narrative.
Several Radio Frequency (RF) handheld cameras offer roaming flexibility to capture activities in and around the stadium, such as fan coverage, team arrivals, and interviews.
